Our 12 steps to a healthier way of eating...

  1. Food should be enjoyed not feared. Make changes to how you view your food and food preparation to reflect this.
  2. Enjoy your food shop. Take extra time for one of your shops every 6 weeks to explore new foods, to read food labels to help you make the healthier choice.
  3. Eat enough to feel satisfied not overly full - it takes 20 minutes for your body to tell your brain that it is full so stop eating before your feel full.
  4. Shop local - if not Galway, then Ireland. If not, Ireland, then Europe. It is better for your body and better for the environment.
  5. Make your own food as much as possible - if you are the chef then you are in control of what is put into your body.
  6. Your plate should contain 1/2 vegetables or salad, 1/4 protein and 1/4 carbohydrate.
  7. Eat simply and light so that you keep most of your energy for living and not for digesting heavy food.
  8. Be colourful with your choice of vegetables and fruit.
  9. Sit and take your time eating to aid digestion. Put your fork down in between each bite and chew your mouthful 20 times.
  10. Make a point of eating with your family at least once a day.
  11. Before deciding what you are going to have for a meal, stop and think about what are your healthy options.
  12. When eating out, you control the menu. Don't be afraid to request off the dish items or substituting one item for another.
